Whether you’re studying for a hard class, trying to stay awake after a long day at work, or simply need a pick me up throughout the day, reaching for an energy drink is often the answer. Whether you’re a caffeine junkie that keeps an energy drink in your hand all day or someone who tries one here and there, knowing how much caffeine is inside whatever you drink is important. This is especially true when it comes to drinks like Powershot.

When it comes to Powershot, and its small package, you may be thinking there is no way it can have that much caffeine inside. If that’s what you’re thinking, you’re very wrong. Each 1 fluid ounce tube of Powershot contains 100 mg of caffeine, which is about the same as a cup of coffee.

Let’s learn a bit more about Powershot Energy’s caffeine content and whether it is safe for you to enjoy when you need an energy boost.

What Is Caffeine?

First thing’s first, what is caffeine? Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant found in several plants. Caffeine helps stimulate the brain and keep it awake when you’re starting to feel sleepy. While naturally occurring caffeine tastes a little bitter, that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy it. The most popular drinks with caffeine inside are coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks like Powershot.

According to The Food & Drug Administration (FDA), up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is safe for a healthy adult to consume. This is roughly 3 to 4 cups of coffee or for those who enjoy energy drinks, one of two of those per day. The important thing to remember about caffeine, however, is that not everyone has the same tolerances. For some people, one cup of coffee can cause them issues. For others, they feel completely fine drinking coffee all day long.

Here’s a look at the amount of caffeine you may find in some of your favorite drinks.

Coffee (8 ounces brewed) 95 mg of caffeine
Tea (8-ounce cup) 26 mg of caffeine
Coke (12-ounce can) 34 mg of caffeine
Rockstar Energy (16-ounce can) 160 mg of caffeine

The Caffeine in Powershot

When it comes to Powershot, the amount of caffeine inside is somewhat shocking due to the small size of the container it comes in. While it’s clear the drink is marketed as a shot of caffeine, unlike other energy drinks that are free of sugar, many may feel it’s okay to enjoy this energy drink several times a day. Unfortunately, when it comes to the recommended amount of caffeine suggested by the FDA, this isn’t the best course of action. By consuming 4 Powershots you can easily consume too much caffeine.

Here are a few signs you’ve consumed too much caffeine and should cut back on your intake:
  • Jitteriness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Insomnia
  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea

Powershot vs Other Energy Drinks

As we’ve mentioned, Powershot contains 100 mg of caffeine per 1 fluid ounce shot. In comparison to other energy drinks on the market, this isn’t considered a huge amount. There are easily several energy drinks out there with more caffeine that can be considered dangerous when drunk in excess.

Here’s a look at how Powershot stacks up against the leaders in the energy drink industry.

Powershot (1 fluid ounce tube) 100 mg of caffeine
5 Hour Energy (1.93 fluid ounce shot) 200 mg of caffeine
Red Bull (8.4 fluid ounce can) 80 mg of caffeine
Monster (16 fluid ounce can) 160 mg of caffeine

Is Powershot Still Available?

From the looks of things on the internet, it appears as though Powershot is no longer available on the market. This doesn’t mean that it may not be available in certain areas if you search hard enough. While there isn’t a lot of information out there explaining why Powershot was discontinued, it doesn’t mean there was a huge controversy. It’s quite possible the drink simply didn’t sell well and the distributors decided it was time to call it quits.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Powershot was a highly concentrated hit of caffeine for those looking for a boost. While some people may feel that 100 mg of caffeine in a 1 fluid ounce bottle is an alarming amount, if taken in moderation, the drink can still be considered relatively safe. The important thing to keep in mind when it comes to energy drinks or any drink with lots of caffeine, is to understand your tolerances and how much caffeine intake you’re comfortable with. This will help you enjoy your favorite beverages safely and responsibly.
