Spiced Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk) Recipe: Simple Steps

turmeric latte

There are many purported benefits to eating turmeric, including claims of anti-inflammatory effects and reports that it can help improve the symptoms of depression. We do not know about you, but we’re willing to take any advantage we can get when it comes to improving our health. And it just tastes good. A lot of times, things that are good for you aren’t always high on the tasty scale, but here we have found an exception. Our favorite way to consume turmeric is in a delicious, creamy latte. In this step-by-step guide, we’re going to show you how we prepare a delicious cup of golden milk.

How to Make a Golden Milk Latte

Turmeric has a very strong flavor, and it can be overpowering on its own. As an ingredient in a latte, however, it makes a worthy centerpiece to the flavor puzzle. We like to liven our latte up with a few sweeteners and spices.

Pros

  • 2 cups milk (we like to use 1 cup of almond milk and 1 cup of regular milk)
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp maple or honey (both are good!)

Cons

  • Small pot
  • Milk frother or French press (optional)
  • Two large coffee mugs

Once you have your ingredients gathered, it’s time to jump right in.

1. Combine ingredients.

Combine your ingredients in a small pot and stir until they are fully incorporated.

2. Simmer.

Bring the contents to a boil and then simmer over low heat for 2-4 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent clumping.

3. Froth milk.

We like to froth the milk to make it extra creamy. If you have a milk frother, you can use that; otherwise, just bring everything to a boil and stir. If you have a French press, you can mimic a frother by pumping the mixture vigorously with the plunger. Be careful! It’s very easy to splash hot milk out of the french press. Use a slow, controlled motion at first until you get a feel for it.

4. Garnish and enjoy!

Pour the mixture into two large mugs. You can garnish with a cinnamon stick or sprinkle a touch of ground cinnamon over the top for a little more cinnamon kick.

Turmeric Latte: Make it your own

This simple recipe is our favorite, but there are a ton of ways you can make small changes to suit your taste. Here are some of the best ideas we’ve come across.

Spices

There really are no wrong answers when it comes to choosing what spices to add. We like this combination the best, but we’ve also used cardamom, nutmeg, and allspice to great effect. As a rule of thumb, try adding a ¼ tsp to start and adjusting from there. RELATED READ: How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte (Easy Steps)

Milk

It may seem a bit boring, but we prefer ordinary dairy milk in our turmeric lattes. If we have almond milk in the fridge, a 1:1 ratio of almond to dairy milk makes for a nice combo. You can use any milk you like, and we hear oat milk and coconut milk make for some exciting flavor combinations.

Try it with coffee

Many people replace their morning coffee with a nice cup of golden milk, and it does make a good healthy alternative to coffee. We love our morning coffee, and we’re not in a hurry to give it up. One variation that might be even better than the standard turmeric latte is a turmeric latte with coffee. Try adding a shot of espresso or a double shot to experience an equally delicious twist on this recipe. Turmeric lattes have a powerful taste, and the coffee can easily be overshadowed if you use a weak bean. A robust dark roast pairs nicely with the strong flavors in the turmeric latte and produces a balanced cup overall.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for something to spice up your mornings – literally – a turmeric latte could be just what the doctor ordered. Turmeric has become popular in the last few years due to all of the positive effects it can have on your health, but even without those effects, we’d still recommend trying some golden milk. The spices’ aroma bubbling away on the stove are as soothing as making apple cider in autumn and make your kitchen smell just as inviting. Turmeric lattes have quickly become a staple in our repertoire of hot comfort beverages. Either as a substitute for morning coffee or as a creamy treat in its own right, you need to break out the turmeric and give one a try!
